Renewable Energy Company awarded £500,000 wind turbine contract by a County Down farm

Renewable Energy Company awarded £500,000 wind turbine contract by a County Down farm

Green Energy Technology Ltd., based in Waringstown, will install a large wind turbine to supply the farm electricity needs, with any surplus being exported to the national grid.

Green Energy Technology Ltd was approached by the farmer in 2010 to explore his options for reducing the farm energy bills. The company carried out initial feasibility studies on the site and local wind conditions, and initiated the planning permission for a 225kW turbine on 31 metre tower.

Green Energy Technology Ltd. acted as agents on behalf of the farmer, consulted with stakeholders, local councillors and MLA's. Specialist contractors were employed to assess the impact of the turbine on the surrounding area. In early December 2011 the turbine was awarded full planning permission.

The construction project is now under-way, and the company expects completion during the summer of 2012. The 225kW wind turbine, on a tower over 30 metres high, will generate enough power to run over 80 homes. The landowner will use most of the renewable electricity on his farm, and export the remainder to the national grid. The turbine will allow the farm to become much more energy efficient and sustainable for generations to come.
John Martin, Director of Green Energy Technology Ltd. commented; 'It is an exciting project for us to be involved in, not only is it on our doorstep, but it will be the largest turbine of its type in the south east of Northern Ireland' he continued, 'The farmer has made an informed decision, we have provided him with information on wind turbines, planning permission, grid connection, and the financial case for this project'.
In addition to the benefits of lower electricity costs, the farmer will also benefit from a government renewable electricity incentive scheme. This scheme, called the Northern Ireland Renewable Obligation Certificates (NIROCs), has given the farmer the financial security needed to invest in this large scale project. Through NIROCs the farmer will be paid for every unit of green electricity that he generates, regardless of whether he uses or exports this electricity.

Green Energy Technology Ltd. have calculated, using a combination of energy savings, electricity export, and NIROCs - that the investment in this project will be paid back within 6 years or less. The lifespan of the turbine is estimated at well in excess of twenty years.
