A lot of confusion still abounds since Sammy Wilson MLA and Finance Minister, took the decision to close the Low Carbon Homes Scheme (NI). The scheme, although flawed in its application, was widely welcomed by builders, self-builders and those within the renewable energy sector. Green Energy Technology in Waringstown has been at the forefront in working with architects, builders, energy advisors and clients on how to best meet the criteria.
Green Energy Technology supplies specifiers and self builders with comprehensive Energy Advice Reports, these reports detail the criteria need to meet low or zero carbon standard, and the costs of the technology.
To clarify:
The Low Carbon Homes Scheme is a rate relief scheme which operated between 1 April 2010 and 31 March 2011. It aimed to encourage the building of low and zero carbon homes in Northern Ireland.
Although the scheme is now closed, provision has been made for new houses to be eligible where an application for planning permission was made by 31 March 2011 and requires a completed low carbon homes application to be lodged with Land & Property Services by 31 March 2012.
So, if you have applied for planning permission before March 31 2011, and hope to build a low or zero carbon home, AND complete it by 31 March 2012 - then you could still qualify for up to 5 years rates relief.
